Kampala, Uganda – Thursday 17th August 2026
As Uganda advances its digital transformation agenda, strengthening teachers’ digital competencies has become a national priority. An assessment done by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2026 found that the majority of Uganda’s teacher educators do not yet meet the recommended digital skills profile, to effectively integrate digital technologies into teaching and learning. The same assessment revealed that at least 60% of teachers must achieve digital readiness to drive institutional transformation.

To address this challenge, UNESCO is partnering with the Uganda National Institute for Teacher Education (UNITE), the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) and RENU for the implementation of a nationwide digital skilling program for teachers.
Through this initiative, annually, close to 1,200 teacher educators will receive training (across all UNITE campuses) in digital pedagogy, digital content creation, and the effective integration of emerging technologies, including AI, into teaching and learning.
RENU is enabling a new generation of digitally empowered teacher educators through reliable connectivity to all UNITE campuses and a robust national digital learning environment, strengthening the delivery of Uganda’s Competence-Based Education and Training (CBET) curriculum and supporting the country’s digital transformation in education.
