eduroam
Why eduroam?
Most times, visiting students, researchers or staff at a particular institution have to contact the IT departments to get access to the network which is normally availed in the form of temporary user accounts, or shared passwords for wireless connections. However, this can easily expose them to cyber insecurity. At worst, they fail to get access.
With eduroam, when students, staff members or researchers from an eduroam subscribing institution visit another institution that has eduroam, they get connected to the wireless network securely and instantly without asking anyone. eduroam (https://www.eduroam.org/) is now present in more than 100 countries globally.
RENU is the National Roaming Operator (NRO) for eduroam in Uganda.
Launched in 2003, eduroam has since grown into a widespread and trusted service, connecting millions of students, researchers, and educators across the globe. The primary goal is to facilitate network access for users within educational and research institutions, both nationally and internationally. This initiative allows students, faculty, and staff to connect to the Internet at any participating institution using their home institution’s credentials.
eduroam Impact
When COVID-19 hit the Country in 2020 and education institutions were closed, RENU decided to extend eduroam to various locations outside the campuses of institutions, in form of Metro eduroam.
