IXP Routing Workshop

As part of UbuntuNet-Connect 2009 that will be hosted by RENU and the UbuntuNet Alliance, the Internet Society and Association of African Universities are jointly supporting a technical workshop on IXP Routing. The workshop is designed for Engineers who are responsible for the Network Routing and Interconnection at the NRENs as well as individual Universities. The objective of the workshop is to provide practical knowledge on Dynamic Routing Protocols i.e BGP and OSPF. Further the engineers will gain better understanding on efficiency routing mechanism for academic/nren traffic and commodity internet content. This will enable them make decisions on how to establish interconnection agreements with Internet Exchange Points, other NRENs, and upstream providers.

The advanced hands-on workshop will be held from 7th-11th November, 2009 and cover the following topics;

  1. Internet and Routing
  2. Routing Protocols
  3. OSPF and BGP
  4. BGP, Attributes, policy, Scaling and multi-homing technics
  5. Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) peering and Transit mechanisms
  6. Introduction to IPv6 basics

The participants are expected to have prior knowledge or experience with routing and basic routing (Static routing). The participants will also be required to bring along their wifi-enabled laptops for the training, eliminating the need for computers and cabling and the working language is English.

Nominated participants should be people who have formal and ongoing involvement in the implementation plans of the data nework of your NREN. They will also be expected to stay and participate at the regular UbuntuNet-Connect Conference that will follow immediately after the workshop. Please note that continuity requires that these individuals will be with your NREN for at least the next 12 months.

Below is the tentative programme for the 5 day hands-on training.
